Highway 65 was closed for one hour Jan. 15, due to a head-on collision that occurred at 11:30 a.m. The collision occurred on Highway 65 at Nader Road, when a Honda Odyssey collided head-on with a cement mixer. Both drivers had been traveling at 55 mph. The driver of the van, Rex Smothers, 70, was listed in critical condition with major injuries, while the driver of the cement mixer, Kenny Rister, 40, sustained minor injuries. Both men are from Sacramento. The collision happened when Smother’s van, which was traveling northbound on Highway 65, drifted into the southbound lane of the highway. The reason for Smother’s van drifting into the southbound lane is still unknown, according to the California Highway Patrol. Smothers had to be extricated by Cal-Fire and was air-lifted to Sutter Roseville Medical Center via CHP helicopter, and Rister was transported by Cal-Fire to Kaiser Roseville, according to CHP. Highway 65 was closed for one hour in both directions so the collision could be investigated and to allow the CHP helicopter to land.
