On Saturday and Sunday, firefighters were raising money for the Firefighters Burn Institute, a non-profit burn foundation started by Sacramento Area Fire Fighters Local 522 more than 30 years ago after a fiery airplane crash into a Farrell's ice cream parlor. Donations will be used to improve burn treatment in local burn units, fund important burn recovery programs, including Firefighters Kids Camp for young burn survivors and support burn and fire prevention outreach programs. The annual Fill the Boot for Burns is the major source of funding for the burn programs. This year, Lincoln firefighters raised more than $19,000 as part of the Placer County satellite fundraising drive. Placer County firefighters also raised money in North Auburn and at Thunder Valley Casino, which donated $2,000. All told, the satellite drive raised $53,460, the first time in the fundraiser's history that a satellite drive has raised more than $50,000.
