Marsha Elam – artist statement Ceramic art has appealed to me all my adult life but it wasn’t until 2006 that I started playing with clay. It didn’t take long to become totally hooked. I work out of Alpha Fired Arts in Sacramento – my home away from home. I love whimsical themes, interesting faces, anthropomorphic characters and things that are a bit askew. Tim Burton’s “Alice in Wonderland” met all these criteria and was the inspiration for “Waiting for Alice.” I also drew on the classic Disney characters. I first did a small version with the intent to do a larger sculpture. My goal was to incorporate as many of the characters as I could into one sculpture. I seldom do the same sculpture twice, so after completing the small sculpture, it took several months before I was reenergized enough to take on the larger version. I am certainly glad that I did.
