Ducking a tragedy at Sun City

Lincoln firefighters fly to aid of distressed ducklings
Lincoln firefighters were quick to effect a heroic rescue Friday morning — of a bedraggled raft of ducklings stuck in a drain at Sun City Lincoln Hills. “We got a call for ducks in a drain at Lakecrest Court,” Lincoln Fire Chief David Whitt said. “The mama duck was standing on top of the drain; she wanted her babies in the worst way. “Fortunately, we were able to use some improvisational tools and rescue all the babies and they waddled away and back into the water.” According to Whitt, it is not that uncommon to find ducklings trapped in storm drains, particularly in the spring. “We’ve had it happen a few times each year,” he said. “This time of year, there’s a lot of babies out there.” Whitt said the drains have a grating system, but the backsplash is open to allow debris to pass through and the ducklings are so small, they can slip through.
