Authorities responded to a rollover accident on Interstate 80 in Auburn on Thursday evening involving a single driver who lost control of his vehicle.

The driver, 33-year-old Jason Heil of San Francisco, sustained no major injuries, though his 1998 Subaru Forester showed rollover damage.

Officer David Martinez of the California Highway Patrol said the incident occurred at 9:25 p.m. east of Auburn Ravine Road.

“He just lost control. He made an unsafe turn, an unsafe lane change and just lost control of the vehicle,” he said. “The vehicle was about to flip over, struck a race curb, and struck a wire fence with the top of the vehicle.”

Martinez could not confirm whether Heil sustained minor injuries, but said he made a statement at the scene and will likely be found at fault for making an unsafe lane change. There is no evidence that alcohol was a factor.

Arriving at the scene 15 minutes after the accident happened, Grass Valley resident Steve Tillotsan said police closed the road while emergency responders cleared the scene. Officers told him the vehicle had swerved off the freeway, hit a telecommunications cabinet and got caught by a chain link fence across from Sizzler and Ikeda’s California Country Market, which stopped it from tumbling onto Lincoln Way.
