A Lincoln High graduate took up the game of golf only to discover not only was he a natural but his competitive spirit now has him thinking of much bigger things to come. Pasquale ?Pete? Sprague took up the game of golf while attending college in Southern California. His game improved so rapidly he decided to join the Golf Channel AM Tour presented by Golf Galaxy. The AM Tour is a national tour made up of amateur players competing without handicap in a variety of flights. Sprague competes in the Championship Flight. ?I earned it,? said Sprague as to the talent he developed hitting 1,000 golf balls a week. His hard worked dropped his handicap from 12 to less than three. ?The only thing that gets in my way is between my ears,? he added. To help him deal with the mental challenges Sprague sought the services of Will Robins Golf at Turkey Creek Golf Club. Will Robins? career and golf academy were chronicled in the April 19 edition of the News Messenger. Robins teaches the art of scoring and that is what Sprague does best. He has won two AM Tour events and will be playing in Sunday?s Lincoln Hills Championship at Lincoln Hills Golf Club. He ranks fourth on the order of merit in the Sacramento/Stockton AM Tour playing in almost half as many tournaments as the top three. Sprague joined the AM Tour in mid-season last year and did well enough to qualify for this year?s National Championship to be held at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., in September. He will join the Pepsi Tour next year with an eye on playing on the Tour (formerly Nationwide Tour) in the near future. Sprague, the son of former Lincoln Mayor Raymond Sprague, is also looking for sponsors to assist him with expenses. Anyone interested can e-mail or call (916) 303-3237. Sprague gave special thanks to his fiancé Lara Goggia and their children Giovanni and Guilana Sprague.
