City moves temporary dog park

Lincoln’s temporary dog park has been relocated from Third Street and Santa Clara Way to the new Foskett Regional Park. Starting May 2, dogs and their owners will be able to play on a 2-acre patch of land originally set aside for an aquatics center. While still planned, the center won’t be built for at least seven years, said Mandy Walker, the city’s assistant director of recreation. The former dog park at Third and Santa Clara is being cleared to make way for a new cemetery. “The Cemetery District was gracious enough to allow us to place the temporary dog park at their site,” Walker said. “But fortunately for the district, they’re also getting ready to go out to bid to create a new cemetery (there).” Dog park users had requested the city relocate the park until a permanent facility is completed at Auburn Ravine Park, Walker said. On Tuesday, the City Council agreed to allocate $5,000 from a capital improvement fund to cover the move, which includes providing fencing and a water connection and relocating doggie dispensers. – Cheri March
