Cardinals take no chances, beat Braves 10-3
MCBEAN PARK – The Cardinals made a statement of their intent to make it to the District 11 Tournament of Champions by beating the No. 1 Braves 10-3 Wednesday night in a Lincoln Little League Majors tournament game.
Trailing 3-1 entering the fifth inning, the Red Birds cut loose for five runs capped by Michael Pinney’s three-run home run. Leading 6-3 going into the sixth inning, the Cards tacked on another four runs for insurance thanks to Garret Tofft’s three-run round-tripper.
Cardinals’ offense: Bo Culbertson (single), Gage Eastlick (single, 2runs), Wyatt Arbaugh (4-4, double, 2runs), Tofft (HR, 2runs, 3RBI), Chase Christopherson (2runs), Jason Johnson (single, run, RBI) and Pinney (HR, run, 3RBI).
Braves’ offense: Dylan Rhodes (single), Michael Newsom (2-3, run), Clayton Coats (2-3, double, 2runs), Blake Havey (2-3, RBI), Brett Woolley (single), Nick Burns (single) and Colby Easter (single).
Arbaugh pitched 4 2/3 innings for the Cards and struck out seven; Christopherson closed with three Ks.
The Braves sent Woolley (4 2/3 ip, 11K), Michael Newsom (1/3 ip) and Rhodes (1 ip, 2K) to the hill.
The St. Lou Crew had two errors and the Atlanta nine committed five.
Tonight, 7:15 p.m. – Astros at Pirates (elimination game).
