Bus trips to casinos and bingo games may not normally be thought of as fundraisers, but for members of the Lincoln Golden Club, these activities are. That’s because the club provides scholarships for Lincoln High School students with money raised from the thrice-yearly bus trips and Scholarship Bingo, according to club president Mary Weir. The bus trips are available to those 21 and older, cost $25, and include destinations such as the Red Hawk Casino and the Silver Legacy Casino. The Scholarship Bingo, available to the public, is $20 for a number of bingo games. Weir said the club gives at least two $300 scholarships a year, and have also given money to the Lincoln High School music program in the past. Lincoln Golden Club secretary Gayle Richardson said potential scholarship recipients fill out a form for the scholarship, and are then interviewed by club members. “We don’t always give it to the best student but to those that look like they could use help and are sincere about their goals,” Richardson said. Aside from the fundraiser aspect of the Lincoln Golden Club, it is also a place for Lincoln’s seniors to meet new friends and have fun, according to Weir. The club meets at the Lincoln Veterans Memorial Hall on the first Wednesday of the month for a potluck and bingo, according to Weir. Richardson said it’s a nickel for every bingo card played. She said the club is available to men and women 55 and older, and is $10 a year to join. “It’s a place of good food, fellowship and fun,” Richardson said.
