A strong Nevada Union junior varsity team came to Lincoln Friday hoping to pick up their first win of the preseason, but the Fighting Zebras had other ideas.

The Miners jumped out to an early lead on a 9-yard pass play five minutes into the first quarter, but that’s where Lincoln drew the line. The visitors would finish the game with just 135 yards of offense and on the short end of a 24-6 score.

Taras Zybshko put the Zebras on the board with a booming 42-yard field goal in quarter two and the momentum of the game swung decidedly in favor of the home team. Zybshko missed a second field-goal effort, as the half ended with Lincoln trailing 6-3.

The Zebras went on a march in the third quarter, capped by a 9-yard TD run by Ryan Graham.

Lightning then struck just one minute later, when defensive lineman Zach Eutsey picked off a tipped Miners’ pass and rambled 24 yards into the Nevada Union end zone. Zybshko added his second point-after kick and the Zebras were up 17-6.

“I saw my teammate go in there; he made a hit and (the ball) just flew up and my first reaction was to jump up and get it. Without my teammate I don’t make that play,” said Eutsey, who said he had an open field ahead of him. “I was just hoping not to get caught by Nevada Union. I wasn’t going to let anybody catch me.”

Zybshko added the finishing touches in the final frame, with a 30-yard touchdown run and his kick ended the scoring.

Nevada Union went to the air to try and get back into the game, but an interception by Dominick Sanders with three minutes left in the game sealed the deal.

The Fighting Zebras (1-1-1) will host Wheatland Friday at 5:30 p.m.
