Now that the fall sports season is in full swing, we at Gold Country Media like to keep tabs on the athletes with local roots. Here’s what we have for the first week:

Roseville Tigers and Bears, Oh my!

Roseville High’s Jordan Kunaszyk had seven tackles in the Cal Bears’ 24-17 victory over North Carolina Saturday. The senior inside linebacker was on the preseason watch lists for the Butkus Award – the nation’s best linebacker, the Ronnie Lott IMPACT award and the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, given at the end of the season to college football’s top defensive player.

Strong-Side Trips

Rocklin’s Wesley Preece caught three passes for 75 yards and a touchdown in UC Davis’ 44-38 victory Aug. 30 at San Jose State. It was Preece’s 10th career touchdown with the Aggies. In the same game, Whitney grad Justin Kraft hauled in two passes for 10 yards for the Aggies, and Oakmont’s Justin Holmes had three catches for 24 yards for the Spartans.

Aces High

Abby Marjama tied a 22-year-old school record for UC Irvine women’s volleyball. The freshman from Granite Bay had nine serving aces to etch her name into the Anteaters record books in a 3-1 win over St. Mary’s at the Utah Volleyball Classic Aug. 25. It was UC Irvine’s first win of 2018.

Rocklin’s Evyn Holtz opened up 2018 with a bang, scoring two rushing touchdowns against Sacramento City College Sept. 1 in a 28-14 victory for the Beavers.

Zebras fightin’

Sierra College football took a tough 56-13 loss at City College of San Francisco Saturday, but there were a few local bright spots for the Wolverines. Two Lincoln High grads scored Sierra’s only touchdowns of the day. Running back Ryan Graham ran for 65 yards and a touchdown and also caught nine passes for 61 more yards while Caleb Kettlehut made one of his two receptions worth six points.

Sierra spiking

Whitney’s Gabby Roberts has 24 kills (fourth on the team) and leads the Sierra College volleyball team with 14 blocks during the Wolverines’ 4-0 start to 2018. Del Oro’s Madison Meteer has hit for double-digit kills in three of Sierra’s first four matches.

Fever Pitch

Rocklin’s Morgan Irwin had four goals in a 12-0 rout of Sequoias Aug. 28 to kick off Sierra’s women’s soccer season. The Wolverines are 4-0 through Sept. 5, outscoring opponents 31-4 behind eight goals and 21 points from Woodcreek grad Grace Vargas.

Please help keep us informed on area athletes who are playing at the college level and beyond.
