Media pollsters pick Placer to again top PVL
According to the media preseason voters, Placer should once again hang the Pioneer Valley League banner for football on its walls of honor. The Hillmen garnered seven of the nine votes cast by the pollsters.
Ironically, this week all three of the teams picked to finish at the top lost their opening games. The three teams at the bottom of the list all won. But game one is a long way from the finish line.
The following media participated in the poll: The Auburn Journal, The Sacramento Bee, The Folsom Telegraph, The Roseville Press Tribune, The Colfax Record, KAHI radio, The Grass Valley Union and The Lincoln News Messenger. Below is how they see things stacking up:
PIONEER VALLEY LEAGUE
Predicted Final Standings
Placer *(7) 50
Bear River *(1) 41
Lincoln *(1) 38
*(first place votes)
The above comes close to how things turned out in 2015. The difference being that Lincoln was No. 2, Bear River tied Center for third and Colfax finished last; Foothill was fifth.
By sheer numbers, Placer took the biggest hit via graduation. Although that has rarely slowed them down in the past, they did lose seven of the league’s top players.
Bear River was not far behind in graduating top talent, as well as Foothill. Lincoln appeared to suffer the least amount of damage courtesy of the diploma, but the talent the Fighting Zebras lost was substantial.
As far as preseason goes, here was how the PVL looked going into league play last year; where the teams stood at the finish of the season is in parentheses.
Placer (1st) 5-0
Bear River (3rd/4th) 5-0
Center (3rd/4th) 4-1
Lincoln (2nd) 3-2
Colfax (6th) 2-3
Foothill (5th) 1-4
