Joyce and the late Jim Bachman will be honored Sunday with the Gold Apple Award at the Fruitvale School Hall Association’s annual barbecue fundraiser. The Gold Apple Award recognizes community contributions.
The annual barbecue raises money to support the Fruitvale School Hall’s programs and scholarships.
Sunday’s event includes children’s performances, games and the Local Celebrity Dessert Chef Auction featuring representatives from Lincoln service organizations and public figures. This year, entrants will be led by the Singing Dessert Chef. Bidding is high during this action and the all-time winning bid so far was won by Joyce Bachman for $2,200, according to Dr. Lyndell Grey, Fruitvale’s executive director.
“This precious old schoolhouse was built in 1889 for educating the children of the surrounding farms and ranches. When it closed as a school in 1946, it became a community center for potluck dinners, 4-H and organizations. It continues to this day as a community center and now features children’s programs,” Grey said. “Over 1,000 local children have attended these programs in recent years such as the After School Program, the Living History Program and the summer Ranch Camp. The funds raised at the barbecue keep all these programs alive and support many scholarship students.”
Sunday’s barbecue is from 5 to 8 p.m.
