Zebras golf gets ready for new seasonBy: Aaron Jackson for The News Messenger
The Lincoln High School boys golf team has been preparing for their upcoming season, which begins March 14 against Bear River at Lincoln Hills Golf Club.
The team has had three preseason matches to prepare for Pioneer Valley League competition.
The Zebras lost to River Valley by 32 strokes at home back on Feb. 28. Two days later, they defeated Pioneer by 43 strokes at Yolo Fliers Club, which is where the Fighting Zebras won the Sac-Joaquin Section banner last season. The Zebras then played Union Mine Monday and lost by 24 strokes.
The Zebras are coached by Eric Souto and David Foxworthy. Souto discussed the strengths of the team.
“Our top four player all have capabilities of shooting in the high 30s or low 40s by middle of the season.” Souto said, “We will be getting a new transfer in the first week of April and when that happens I think we can beat anybody we play.”
Coach Foxworthy stated, “There is improvement from those who are back from last year, which is very positive. We also have a couple of freshmen who were golfers in the past and once they knock the rust off they will be very good for us.”
Two returning golfers from last season are senior Danny Allen and junior Kyle Easter. Easter was questioned on his improvement during the offseason.
“Last year I picked up golf and kind of went out and winged it. My swing was not formed and during the offseason I got a swing formation,” the junior said. “I also have improved as a putter, as well, when it comes to speed.”
Allen was asked as to his goals for the season.
“I need more stability off the tee and putting is going to be very key as well,” Allen said. “After that, everything else is pretty solid.”
The Zebras begin their Pioneer Valley League season at home Tuesday against Bear River. Then they are on the road March 16 to play the Colfax Falcons at The Ridge Golf Club. It should be a very hard-fought and competitive season.
