Lincoln track team at Clarke Massey Relays
RANCO CORDOVA – The Lincoln High boys and girls track teams got a break in the weather and traveled to Cordova High School for the Clarke Massey Relays meet Saturday.
The uniqueness of the Relays is that all events are team related. The scores of three athletes from each school participating in an event are combined to determine first, second and third place.
The only exception is the 3200-meter run, where Tommy Paulson finished third in 10:22.85 for the boys. Saedy Williamson was fourth for the girls, crossing the finish line in 13:00.00.
The Fighting Zebras claimed gold in both the boys and girls high jump.
Boys – Gavin Menefee cleared 5-feet-8-inches, and Anthony Anderson and Jarod Heath both went 5-4 for first place.
Tyler Smith (4-10), Leah Peterson (4-8) and Teagan Hackbarth (4-4) took the top prize for the girls.
Boys – Brad Arline (103 feet), and Jarod Heath (100) and Antonio Nevarez (100) combined their throws for second place in the discus.
Girls – Bailey Learned (32-6), Corina Garcia (26-11) and Elyse Bingham (21-1) were third in the shot put and Learned (85-2), Brittany Powell (71-5) and Laura Vize 69-0) teamed for bronze in the discus.
“Overall, it was a great start to the season and, given that we haven't had much time outside due to the weather, all of the coaches were very pleased with the efforts put forth by the team,” said Lincoln head coach Rick Brown. “We now have two weeks before our next competition and, with some luck from Mother Nature, we'll be able to be outside on the track and start to fine tune some performances and see how strong we can be.”
Other outstanding performances were also credited by Coach Brown. Brown said schools that did not have three athletes in each event were still able to enter individual athletes.
Kyle Sigrist leaped 20-11.5 in the long jump and Menefee stretched out for 19-1.25 in the same event. Menefee also triple jumped 39-10 at the Relays.
Maile Duque turned in an effort of 15-6 in the girls long jump.
Dylan Peach (18-8) and Joey Brown (18-4.5) competed in the junior varsity long jump.
