Running slightly under the radar this fall was the girls cross-country team at Western Sierra Collegiate Academy and out front was a freshman named Sara Sabra.

Sabra and her teammates: seniors Jennifer Weiher, Leila Doty, Malia Rebollow and Freya Davis, as well as junior Anna Black and sophomore Rhiannon Repetti all qualified for the CIF State Championships in November. The Wolves finished in 20th place for Division V.

The Wolves earned their trip to state by placing second at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championships, where Sabra crossed the finish line in first. She was followed by Weiher, Doty, Repetti and Black to round out the team.

Both events were over a 5,000-meter course.

Sabra placed fourth at subsections covering the 3-mile course at Angels Camp in 21:52.7. However, with the support of Weiher, Doty, Repetti and Black, the academy laid claim to the Division V team championship.

Sabra also captured gold at the Wildfire Invitation in Foresthill, where the Wolves finished second. That time Davis made it into the team’s top five.

Sabra and her teammates started the season running in a number of meets that included division I, II, III schools like Granite Bay, Vacaville, Placer and even Lincoln of Stockton. Lincoln of Stockton has the largest student enrollment in the SJS.

Although Western Sierra will graduate some outstanding runners, Sabra and the Wolves should continue setting the pace for years to come.
