Perhaps the start of an annual tradition

Lincoln High School hosted the first-ever women’s alumni soccer match Dec. 20. The alumni took on the current varsity team at Lincoln High and the end result was a varsity victory 3-1 over the alumni.

Most of the goals occurred in the first half of action, with one coming in the second half. Coach Shonna Fraser scored all three goals for the varsity team. However, the score wasn’t the most important part of this event.

What was important is that former Fighting Zebras’ soccer player Savannah Avila came up with this idea in the first place.

Avila stated, “I wanted to create this because I’ve seen other high schools do the same thing and it is important to come together as a community. This was a lot of fun and it made me think about how short high school is.”

Avila wants to continue these alumni matches in the future and for years to come.

The game featured former alumni Abbie Feingold, Lauren Edwards, Monica Guzman and, of course, Avila.

“This was a lot of fun and it was nice to come back and watch all of the girls back in action again,” Edwards said.

Feingold said “It was fun getting to reconnect with people and seeing how the program has progressed.”

One thing is certain, this is a great concept for high school sports and hopefully this continues for the future and expands out for other athletics at Lincoln High. A debt of thanks was extended to all the family and friends who attended the game, and hopefully attendance is even greater next year.
