The Lincoln High girls basketball varsity settled for second place in the Chavez Classic Saturday, losing their tournament finale 68-64 to River Valley.

The Falcons methodically edged to a 35-25 halftime lead. The Fighting Zebras then rallied to claim the second half 39-33, but came up just short.

Kalyna Kim and Keegan Linke scored 19 points apiece and Makayla Franco added 11 in the game. Linke also scraped 11 rebounds off the glass and Franco pulled down eight.

The Zebras were 2-for-12 for free throws, River Valley 12-13.

Kim and Linke were named to the all-tournament team.

Placer was first in the tournament, beating Nevada Union 44-41. The Miners were also awarded second place; River Valley was third and Oroville consolation.

Lincoln 58, Oroville 23

The Zebras’ defense suffocated the Tigers and avenged an earlier loss to Oroville.

Lincoln had 22 steals and 34 rebounds, but was 3-13 from the charity stripe.

Carolyn McCommas scored 14 and Madison Roberts 10.

Lincoln 46, Yuba City 36

McCommas scored 10 in the tourney opener as the Zebras rolled to victory.

Lincoln will host the 30th annual Lincoln Invitational Tournament Dec. 28-30.

Junior Varsity

The Lincoln junior varsity crushed Colfax in the Chavez Classic championship 36-17 and improved the Zebras’ record to 9-0 this season.

Yuba City was third in the tournament and Oroville consolation.

In Lincoln’s semifinal match-up against Yuba City, the hosts surged to a 34-11 lead by halftime. Making liberal use of her bench, JV head coach Donna Tofft’s Zebras rolled to a 51-31 victory.

Lincoln’s Jada Bolar and Carlize were named all-tournament.
