Lincoln soccer off to a super start

The Lincoln High boys soccer team opened the preseason tying Whitney 2-2 Dec. 1 and has since won eight straight matches.

Head coach George Bonilla’s Division III section defending champions picked up where they left off. The Fighting Zebras have beaten Roseville (1-0), Rio Linda (6-1), Chrisitan Brothers (1-0), Pittsburg (1-0), Oakmont (2-1), Nevada Union (3-1), Lindhurst (2-1) and Mesa Verde (7-0).

Manuel Martinez leads the team in scoring with five goals; Peyton Buell and Fernando Zepeda have four each. Martinez also has eight assists.

Sophomore goalkeeper Maclean Learned has made 33 saves so far.

Lincoln was scheduled to begin Pioneer Valley League play begins Jan. 10 at Foothill.


The Zebras opened the preseason with two 1-0 losses, but have won six straight since by the accumulative score of 34-2. Only Yuba City (4-2) was able to avoid a shutout.

Autumn Bersch and Aliyah Aguilar lead the Zebras with six goals each, and Natalie Gonzalez and Andrea Cuevas have three each. Bersch and Cuevas also lead in assists with four apiece.

Head coach David Zinzun’s team will host Foothill Jan. 10 to open PVL competition.
