It is time for the Lincoln High girls basketball Chavez Classic combined varsity and junior varsity pre-Christmas tournament.

The varsity features six teams with prescheduled games beginning at 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and starting at 4 p.m. Saturday. The championship awards will be based on each team’s three-game record (formula tiebreaker) with trophies for first, second, third and consolation.

The simultaneous junior varsity tournament has an eight-team bracket with championship and consolation routes determined Thursday. The JV dates and times mirror the varsity; only games begin at 3:30 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 2:30 on Saturday.

VARSITY

Lincoln – The Fighting Zebras come in battle tested with a (5-2) record. They beat Marysville 64-29 Tuesday and Woodland in overtime last week 69-66. They also have won by 19 and lost by that same margin.

Lincoln head coach Tim Sprinkles is hoping for a good turnout from the Zebras’ fan base. He said his club always plays with greater confidence when inspired by the crowd.

“Confidence is something that we’ve been working on from day one with these girls,” Sprinkles said. “It’s been definitely the heart of our team meetings and our philosophy that we’ve had preseason.”

Early-season top guns for Lincoln are juniors Kalyna Kim and Keegan Linke. Linke and Makayla Franco have also controlled the boards, combining for 74 rebounds.

Placer – Although 3-5 so far, the Hillmen are always tough. Head coach Tony Camillucci will have his team ready before Pioneer Valley League competition begins.

The Hillmen were runners-up in their tournament played earlier this month.

Seniors Mollie Brogdon and Gwen Conlee were selected all-tournament.

River Valley – The Falcons come in 3-3. In their three victories they have won by an average of 29 points.

The Raptors are led by junior Vikatolia Po’oi, and seniors LeAundra Walker-Brown and Devyn Dahlstrom.

Nevada Union – The Sierra Foothill League Miners will join Lincoln and Placer in the newly-formed Foothill Valley League next season.

The Grass Valley club defeated Placer 54-48 Dec. 5.

Oroville – The 4-3 Tigers are on the prowl. They handed Lincoln a 49-44 defeat Dec. 8 and top the Westside League preseason standings.

Yuba City – The Honkers could be a pre-tournament favorite with a 4-2 record in preseason. However, YC has no seniors on the team and two freshmen.

The Dan Hicks’ coached club is second in the Tri-Country Conference in preseason play.
