The Professional Golf Association (PGA) is well known for its charitable contributions, but this sports benevolence is not confined to professionals.

The Sun City Lincoln Hills Lincsters ladies golf club decided to take a swing at breast cancer last month. On Oct. 25, the club hosted a tournament and raised more than $25,500, which they handed over to Cindy Picos of the Placer Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Taking a Swing at Breast Cancer tournament was organized by Jan Varin and Ingela Butters. One could say it was an ordinary one-day, nine-hole tournament played on the Hill Course at Lincoln Hills Golf Club, but what Varin and Butters accomplished was extraordinary.

The tournament drew 114 golfers and they were divided up playing either the front or back nine. A soup and salad bar luncheon was held in the Orchard Creek Ballroom and an additional eight participants showed up for that.

Money was raised through hole sponsorships, player fees and the sale of mulligan bags. There was also a raffle offering merchandise and gift cards, as well as numerous individual donations.
