The Lincoln High School cross-country team ended their season Saturday at the Sac-Joaquin Section Championship running the Willow Hills Reservoir course in Folsom. Three individual Fighting Zebras made it from subsections to the section championship.

Competing was sophomore Destiny Everett for varsity girls. The boys featured freshman Levi Barnby and sophomore Christopher Pickett.

Out of her 10 races this season, only twice did Everett finish outside the top 10. Pickett had four top-10 finishes this season and Barnby had one.

At the section championship, Pickett came in 32nd for the sophomores with a time of 12:47 on the 2.1-mile course. Barnby came in 21st for the freshmen with a time of 12:57.

As for Everett, she came in 10th out of the 74 varsity girls competing in Division II. In fact, she was only two seconds away from placing ninth and making it onto the State Meet in Fresno. Everett came in with a time of 19:32 on the 3.04-mile course. With Everett being only a sophomore, she still has two more years and two more opportunities to make it even further than she already has.

When asked about thoughts on her season, Everett replied “I’ve been very grateful to be team captain this season and it has been nice to improve every race.

“I was very convinced I would make it to state. Not making it is painful, but it’s also humbling and it has reminded me that there is a time for everything,” the sophomore added.

The head coach for the Fighting Zebras is Joseph Uptain-Villa.

He said “This was a good season, we are transitioning to Division II next year so we will have to practice a lot in the offseason to stay competitive. We have to commit to each workout we have.”

Assistant coach Janae Krugle added “We are a young team so potential is there to improve. We have to hold runners accountable for their mileage and have them run their hardest, which is what they do every time they compete.”

The Fighting Zebras had a very successful season and special recognition goes to Everett, Pickett and Barnby for making it all the way to sections.
