‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ – just play the game instead

It has come to the point where playing a video game can be more enthralling than sitting through most movies. So much time and effort goes into telling a good story while playing a game these days that it’s a little embarrassing when the film version can’t do the same. “Resident Evil: Retribution” is the shockingly awful fifth installment of the zombie horror franchise in which we finally learn that everyone involved is as brain-dead as the flesh-eaters. Milla Jovovich returns as Alice, a genetically altered one-woman army who is adept at dispatching the undead while flipping through the air in slow motion. The script, if you can call it that, has Alice trapped in an underground training facility formerly run by the evil Albert “I wear my sunglasses at night” Wesker. However, the two must form an unlikely alliance to stop a more grandiose plan to annihilate the entire human race. Jovovich is married to director Paul W.S. Anderson so her presence can be forgiven and likely chalked up to a household chore arrangement. You know, an “I’ll clean the litter box, you star in my horrible movie” situation. Relatively unknown actors, who were seemingly cast on their ability to hold a gun convincingly and look good in slow motion, fill out the rest of the cast. Have I mentioned the ridiculous amount of slow motion is in the film? In a movie that is soul-crushingly paced, the drawn-out effects only serve to slam home the film’s dull and uninteresting points. What the film fails to understand, but does a great job of highlighting, is that zombie movies are on their last legs. The genre is oversaturated and limp-noodle efforts like “Resident Evil: Retribution” are putting the final nails in the coffin. The last scene in the film hints at more to come but the only satisfaction this series can provide anymore is by staying dead and buried. Frank Miller is a Sacramento writer. “Resident Evil: Retribution” Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson Starring: Milla Jovovich, Sienna Guillory and Michelle Rodriguez Rating: Zero out of five stars
