Dresses made out of pillowcases will be headed to Haiti this October following an upcoming sew fest at Granite Springs Church. The Sept. 22 event, Make a Dress Sew Fest, is spearheaded by church member Bev Trapp, who was inspired to organize it after recently attending a similar event at Bayside Granite Bay. Volunteers will construct dresses out of pillowcases and bias cut tape, according to Trapp, and a pair of new cotton underwear will be included in the dress’s pocket. “I found out we could make these dresses and send them to an orphanage in Haiti,” Trapp said. “We have a couple that goes to Haiti a couple times a year and they make sure and distribute them.” That couple is Marv and Sharon Overway, who will travel to Haiti on Oct. 23 for one month. Sharon Overway said she and her husband will stay at the Children of the Promise orphanage in Cap Haitian, where they will “take care of kids and help out with odd jobs.” “It’s so cool to be bringing clothes to the kids,” Sharon Overway said. “This gives them an opportunity to have nice clothes for when they go (out of the orphanage).” Sharon Overway said the orphanage likes to dress the girls, ranging in age from newborn to 5-years-old, “nicely when they go out into town.” The Make a Dress Sew Fest is open to all who want to help, Trapp said, and will be a joint effort between Granite Springs Church and Lincoln Hills Community Church. “You don’t have to sew,” Trapp said. “We need a lot of cutters and people assembling dresses, and there is tape and elastic to be cut.” There will be several stations with different jobs, Trapp said. “There is one where people will cut the tops off of the pillow cases, another where people will cut arm holes, another station where volunteers will iron down the casing that goes across the front of the dresses and then a station of cutting out the pockets that go on the little dresses,” Trapp said. “We will be keeping people busy.” Donations of pillowcases (every pattern and color except white), bias cut ribbon and new underwear are being accepted, Trapp said.
